Financial Aid Application Process

Since FAFSA formulas assume 20% of a student's assets can be used for college expenses as opposed to 6% of a parent's assets, advisors recommend moving funds from student to parent accounts in prior years, including moving funds to a parent-controlled 529 plan tax-advantaged account. 45 million Americans in 2009 held student debt, and 90% of students used an average of 4 credit cards to pay for some educational expenses. Please note financial aid application deadlines, and submit your application early to maintain the best chances of receiving all the financial aid that you qualify for. Federal Direct Student Loans, also known as Direct Loans or FDLP loans, are funded from public capital originating with the U.S. Treasury. Private student loans are loans that are not guaranteed by a government agency and are made directly to students by banks or finance companies. When Federal student loans enter repayment, they are automatically enrolled in standard repayment. Under it, a borrower has 10 years to repay the total amount of his or her loan.

81% of undergrads are awarded financial aid, while the total amount of financial aid distributed exceeded $1,889,415. Of the students receiving aid in any form, 93% are able to get grants, averaging $2,420. Some 48% of students seeking financial aid obtain Pell Grants, with the average amount being $1,779 received. Finally, the Federal Student Loan Program contributed an additional $4,906 loan to the students qualifying for federal student aid. Student loans should be seen as the measure of last resort, as this entails graduating with a substantial student debt.
